Most of us forget to relax our eyes as we go about our daily work. There are in fact, eye exercises that you can in the office or at home to help you relax your eyes and even improve your vision. These can also help you prevent or reduce eye discomfort such as red eyes or dry eyes.
Blink More Often
Did you know that when you are looking at a TV screen, computer screen or mobile screen for prolonged periods of time, you actually don’t blink as often. From 20bpm (blink per minute), looking at the screen reduces it to 6-8bpm. This results in eye strain and dry eyes which can cause headaches and blurry vision. So don’t forget to blink more often. This helps to lubricate your eyes and signals your brain to refresh so you can look at the data on your screen with fresh eyes.
Do an Eye Roll
We usually do an eye roll to express our disbelief or annoyance towards another person. However, eye rolls are actually a great exercise to improve our vision. Instead of doing it on one side only, do it on the other side too. Look upwards then downwards as well as left and right. You can also draw geometric figures with your gaze like a circle or a square. Try to do it slowly and repeat 5-10 times on each side. Make sure you are moving only your eyes and not your head instead.
Trace an Eight
This is a fun exercise that helps you to increase the flexibility of your eye muscles. Imagine that you are looking at a meadow or the horizon far away. At about 10 feet away, imagine a large number 8 lying on its side on the ground. Trace the figure’s lines with your eyes. Do it clockwise, the counter-clockwise at least 10 times on each side. Again do this slowly so you don’t get dizzy. It would be fun to have someone do this with you.
Focus Near and Far
This exercise is especially helpful for people who wear glasses. Near-sightedness and far-sightedness is caused by our eye muscles not being used enough to focus on objects near us and far from us. Because of our mobile and computer screens, we don’t often spend as much time gazing at objects around us using our own eyes. We take pictures of a lot of these things instead for posting to our social media accounts.
To do this exercise, take off your glasses. Stretch out one arm and make an okay sign with your thumb. Put your other thumb close to your nose. Focus on the thumb closes to you for 2 seconds and move your gaze to your thumb farther away for another 2 seconds. Then focus on an object even further away also for 2 seconds. Bring your focus back to the thumb far from you, then back to the thumb close to you. Repeat this slowly for about 10 times.
Do the 20/20/20
A quick exercise you can do to rest your eyes and lubricate it is to follow the 20/20/20 rule. Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes of work. Use this time to focus on an object in the distance, 20 feet away from you. This can help you prevent eye strain and dry eyes.
Warm Your Eyes
After doing all the exercises, you might feel your eyes getting tired or strained. Just close your eyes, rub your palms together and cup each palm to the socket of each eye. Keep your eyes closed and try to stare into the dark space while keeping your eyes focused in the distance. Hold the gentle pressure until all the residual colors you see fade to black. The warmth of your palm will help relax your eyes and refresh them. Do this for around 30 seconds.
Doing these exercises will help you strengthen your eye muscles and improve your vision in the long term. The best way to maintain your eye health is to see a professional for any issues and maintain your physical wellness through a healthy diet and exercise.
We give you 5 ways to destress in 15 minutes or less. It is common practice for our minds to be jumping from one thought to the next while our bodies are actively reacting to these thoughts. When this habit starts to feel unpleasant, our mental state becomes one of anxiety and our bodies can start feeling discomfort. This is when we start feeling stressed.
There are different types of stress. It can be triggered when facing a tight schedule, a heavy workload or when one is assaulted by too many things that need to be acted on from different areas of life. Stress can make one feel overwhelmed and helpless. During these times, maintaining a positive outlook can be challenging but it’s not impossible.
There are many ways to quickly combat stress, especially in the workplace. Stress is primarily a mental state so aside from quieting one’s mind, relaxing one’s body also helps to calm down a stressed mind. Here are some things you can do to destress in 15 minutes or less.
1. Rest Your Eyes
When we see a lot of things in front of us that we need to act on, this puts us in an anxious state of mind. To stop ourselves from being overwhelmed, it is helpful to close our eyes and rest them for a few minutes. Darkness can also have a calming effect on the mind.
A good exercise to do is to rub your hands together to warm them up. Then apply the palms of both hands on top of each closed eye and press gently for 15 to 20 minutes. Don’t press too hard though. Just enough to comfortably warm your eyes. Rub your palms again to warm them up while you keep your eyes closed and repeat as needed.
Another way to do to rest your eyes is to look through a window with a distant view. Gaze at this view for at least 15 to 20 minutes as you try to breath deeply. Be sure to sit in a relaxing position to do this or stand in front of the window.
2. Focus on Your Breathing
For this activity, it is also helpful to close your eyes while regulating your breath to help you focus. You can do this sitting or lying down. This exercise can also be a form of meditation and is a great way to destress.
Put your hands on your abdomen to help you focus. Inhale deeply and exhale slowly through your nose, feeling your abdomen contract and expand as you do so. This is the proper way to breathe.
You can also try inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Exhale completely using your month. Then close your mouth and let your tongue touch the roof of your mouth. Inhale through your nose for 4 counts, hold your breath for 7 counts, then exhale for 8 counts. Repeat until you feel relaxed.
3. Self Massage
Massages can be helpful to relax yourself. You can give yourself a neck and head massage, a hand massage or a foot massage while sitting down. It only takes a few minutes and it’s easy to do. It’s one of the most pleasant ways to destress.
Here some videos you can follow and practice with to give yourself a good massage.
You can do stretching exercises even while sitting or you can stand in front of your work desk to do some stretches. You can also find a wall to support yourself as you stretch.
Start from your neck to your feet. Stretch each part for 8 counts on each side. You can use your chair or desk for support for standing exercises. A good way to stretch the soles of your feet is to try and move a tennis ball or a similar-sized round object by touching it with the bottom of your foot.
Here’s a good stretching exercise to follow along. You might look silly while doing this if you’re doing it alone so try to ask an officemate to partner up with. Otherwise, you can always just grin at the questioning looks you may get from your colleagues and bear it.
5. Take a Walk
One of the best ways to destress is to get away from the situation. You don’t have to move out of town. Just take a short walk around the block. Try to find the sun, observe your surroundings or count yours steps as you walk to relax your mind. The trick is to find something else for your mind to think about and to get you physically out of a stressful environment. This will help you recalibrate your thinking and revitalize your body to tackle the tasks ahead.
Try out one of these DIY relaxing routines to melt your stress away. Most importantly, never lose your positive attitude to keep stress from piling up on your desk or in your mind.

Are you thinking of how to find a new hobby? Maybe you already have one but you want to try something different. Here are some ways to discover, or rediscover, a new hobby to indulge in. Hobbies not only help you combat boredom; they are also a fun way to help you focus on your goals. Plus, they can help you unleash your genius.
Go back to your childhood
What hobbies did you have before you started working? What activities did you enjoy most during school activities? Go back down memory lane and list down the things that you enjoyed doing then. You might recall a particular hobby that you were fond of. In fact, you might remember that you still have your tools or materials. If this is you, then you can easily take up that hobby again.
Take a self assessment
Your interests might have changed and you may no longer be interested in pursuing the same things you did when you were younger. Take a self-assessment. Make a list of the topics you like talking about with friends and family. Write down the activities that you enjoy doing on your own or with other people. From this list, review each item and cross-out those that you don’t really want to try out again. Whatever is left should be the things you can pursue as a hobby.
Ask your friends
If you want a new perspective and learn more about yourself in the process; then get together with a group of friends (or talk to them individually), or have your friends make suggestions. Ask them what hobbies they think you should have based on how they know you. You might be surprised by their suggestions, and even more surprised by how your friends see and think of you. This is a quick and easy way to find a new hobby.
Try out new things
Finding a new hobby can be an adventure in itself. If you don’t want to write down lists, go down memory lane or call up your friends; then why not start trying out new things? There’s tons of tutorials for various DIY projects online. You only need to choose one and see if you enjoy it. If not, move on to the next until you find one that you want to stick with. This is definitely a fun way to find out a new hobby for yourself.
Transform what you do
Perhaps you don’t really have time to indulge in a hobby. In this case, why not make a hobby of what you already do? Yes, you are doing what you do to earn an income but you can start enjoying it even more if you think of it as a game. Try challenging yourself and giving your self a reward for accomplishing the challenge. Wouldn’t that make work as fun as pursuing a hobby? Just make sure the rewards you give yourself are helpful instead of distracting you from work.
These are jus some of the ways you can discover a new hobby that you can enjoy. Having a hobby helps you to find joy even during tough times. It lets you breath and re-energize yourself so you can take on more of what life has to offer. What other tips do you have for finding a new hobby?
Are you feeling stressed out? Do you experience difficulty in sleeping? The best thing to do is allocate a space or room in your house for you to relax. More often than not, this space is your bedroom. You should be able to learn to forget all your worries once you enter this room. The goods news is that there are little things that you can do to make your room a tranquil space. Here are ways to make your room more relaxing.
1.Use Cool Colors
The color of your bedroom will play a significant role in how you feel, think and act. Warm colors are stimulating. They are best to use in rooms that have a lot of activities and movements. On the other hand, cool colors are relaxing and calming. Thus, it is recommended to use cool colors in the bedroom. Cool colors include blue, green, purple and other variations of the three. Use muted shades, neutral or pastel colors.
2. Put Warm Lighting
Use warm lighting in your bedroom. Leave your white and bright lights in other parts of your house. Warm lighting is the color of a candlestick. It is not stressful in the eye and helps promote relaxation. The natural circadian rhythm of the body predicts the external environment such as sunset and sunrise. Warm lighting gives signals to the body that it is time to unwind for the day and prepares the body to sleep.
3. Use Your Bed for Bed Activities Only
Beds are created to help you sleep and relax. Doing other activities such as working or watching television on the bed will make it more difficult for you to sleep and relax. Your brain associates your activity with your surroundings. If you work on the bed, your mind will associate the bed with work rather than sleep. Thus, it is best to allocate a space for work or studying. In the same way that the light emitted from the television set tricks the body into thinking that it is still daytime. It hinders the secretion of melatonin, the sleep hormone. So it is highly recommended not a television set in your bedroom.
4.Use Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the use of oils that are extracted from plants to promote relaxation and relieve stress. It is also used as a healing treatment. The oils are either applied directly to the skin, sprayed in the air, inhaled or you can put it on bath water. Essential oils are supposed to stimulate the nerves in the nose that is directly connected to the brain creating a calming effect.
5.Use Blackout Curtains
Blackout curtains are made of thicker fabrics or materials resulting in pitch dark blackness in the room when drawn shut. They minimize the amount of light going inside the room making it feel like it is nighttime even though it is daytime outside. They also reduce the amount of heat going inside the room making the room cooler. This effect will improve your overall sleep quality.
6.Put plants
Bring nature in your room by Instilling bedroom plants. Real plants can help improve the quality of your sleep by giving you fresh and oxygen to breathe in.
7.Play Soft Sounds
A sound can either be soft or loud, depending on the volume. Soft sounds have a low volume and can be very gentle. That’s why soft sounds can help you relax. Examples of soft sounds include audiobooks, classical and soft pop music, clock ticking, guided meditation, nature sounds like birds or cricket chirping and a voice of a loved one.
8. Declutter
Numerous studies suggest that clutter has a negative effect on a person’s overall well being. It increases levels of cortisol, the stress hormone in the body. Thus, it is always important to declutterand keep your surroundings clean and orderly.
Have you been feeling tired and stressed from your daily routine? Even for those stuck at home; a break in routine is still needed every once in a while. You long to go out and get away from it all. That’s just one of the reasons to go on a road trip.
Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
— John Lubbock, The Use of Life
A road trip is an opportunity to give your mind and body a rest. It’s a quick getaway that gives back huge benefits for your overall wellness. Who doesn’t want to enjoy the relaxing sights and sounds of nature without being rushed for time? We’re sure you have friends and colleagues who feel the same way. So why not put your heads together and plan for a road trip?
Here are just some of the many good reasons why you should absolutely go on a road trip.
1. Take a Break
When you’re bored with your daily routine or too stressed out to work, you lower your productivity. So instead of risking burn out, why not burn calories having fun on a road trip instead? A break from your usual weekend routine will also change your mindset and energy. It may even inspire new ideas on how you can make work more fun and productive.
If you usually spend your weekends catching up on sleep and still feel groggy on Mondays; that’s one of the good reasons to go on a road trip. Travel can help change your usual sluggish pace. Spending time in nature is always a good way to recharge. Plan a quick swim on the nearest beach or go trekking or biking on a nature trail. Enjoy breathing in the fresh air and take a walk on the ground with bare feet to ground you again and feel the health benefits.
2. Explore a New Place
Pick a place near your area that can be travelled by car that you’ve never been to before. Local travel may not seem as attractive an experience as your dream travel destinations. But you won’t know what gems you’ll find in your own backyard if you don’t go to experience them yourself. Another one of the reasons to go on a road trip is to help businesses in your locality. Ask your colleagues and friends for suggestions.
Is there a tourist spot that some of you have heard of that you want to check out? Have you visited a historical place near your city? Never tried taking a trek on a forest trail? Have you always wanted to climb a mountain? Would you rather have a food trip at some local town?
Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
— Dalai Lama
There are so many choices and possibilities. Just be sure not to put too much on your itinerary. A road trip should be a relaxing and fun experience. It should not be stressful; that’s what you’re trying to get away from.
3. Strengthen Relationships
There’s no question about it. Spending time together deepens the bond between people. That’s why you develop friendships in the workplace. You get to know each other’s personal quirks and preferences in the planning stage and you will learn even more about each other as you experience new things together during your travel.
On a road trip, you do not only get to bond with your friends, you also get to know new people. The stories you share with each other will help you understand each other more deeply than just casual work conversations. This is why people who travel together often go back to work with private jokes that only they understand. Some great friendships began with a road trip and some acquaintances become life long friendships because of a road trip. The people who you meet during your trip could become your very good friends later on too.
Stressed out from your love life or lack thereof? That’s another of the good reasons to go on road trip! It might just be the chance to meet “The One” that you’ve been waiting for.
4. Rediscover Yourself
Travel allows us to discover something new about ourselves. A new environment gives you the chance to reflect on yourself and be more aware of things you always took for granted. Sometimes, it even gives us the opportunity to change our own beliefs and habits and expand our minds to understand different points of views.
You may discover that you actually like listening to the songs of a local artist that a colleague likes to play on their mobile phone. It might just be the right song to accompany you on your road trip. It can even inspire the whole theme of your road trip or vice versa. You might find a new dish that you’ve never tasted before and it might inspire you to learn how to cook. Maybe you rediscover your creative side from encountering some local crafts or art.
You never know what you will learn about yourself once you get out of your comfort zone. What you discover may help improve your life or even drastically change it for the better. One of the best reasons to go on a road trip is that it might turn out to be the first step to your best life yet.
5. Create Lasting Memories
Time is something that you can never get back. You can always get a new job but never more time, so why not spend it making good memories?
Try to go on a road trip whenever you feel that you need to. Get together with the friends who want to experience new things with you too. Laugh togetherabout the funny stories that you have from your childhood; cry together while reading a letter to your past, heartbroken selfover a bonfire on the beach; sing along to your road trip play list; gaze at the stars on a clear night away from city lights and traffic; sleep to the sound of waves gently crashing on the beach; wake up to the sound of birds chirping.
There are so many things to appreciate and wonder at when you travel, and that’s just another one of the many good reasons to go on a road trip. Remember that the journey is the real adventure, the destination is not as important.
Enjoy the road trip with the wonder of a child and get back from the trip more grown up and hopefully, with a greater appreciation of yourself, your travel buddies, your country and the world in general. But don’t just take our word for it. Go on a road trip and experience it for yourself.

We all want a vacation now and then to be able to relax and re-energize. However, our busy lives just doesn’t allow for a luxurious getaway. Us girls also wanted to go on a vacation but our schedules never seem to match. We always had something to do on weekends. But we were all determined and constantly excited to discuss our plans for a weekend getaway. Finally, we settled on just going on a short but fun road trip to a small resort in Atimonan, Quezon.

It was a 6-hour ride, far enough from the city but still near enough not to exhaust us from the travel time. Picking a date to go was tricky at first. But our determination and positive thinking paid off because a couple of days before the weekend, all our schedules synced. So, we met early morning, on a weekend, (despite some mishaps and a sleepless night of packing our bags) for our quick adventure. It was a very quick one indeed. And it was all worth it as we came back with more than just fun memories of our trip.
The essence of pleasure is spontaneity.

The Journey
The 6-hour road trip to Atimonan, Quezon didn’t feel tiring at all as we started early in the morning to avoid traffic. Our goal for this road trip was to relax and have fun. We always thought of this trip as an adventure; so we were all on an adventurous mood as we tried out alternate routes around the area when we did encounter traffic.
One of us volunteered to drive and borrowed her boyfriend’s car for the trip as well. Aside from admiring the sight of green trees, the mountains in the distance and endless fields of green with cows and horses grazing or shading themselves under the trees, we also had a playlist to accompany us. Of course, we had lots to talk about too so we never got bored during the trip.
One of the most fun we had was when we were going thru the zigzag road. Since the road had steep turns, people are stationed at these sharp corners to manage traffic. They signal drivers to stop when there are oncoming cars from the opposite lane to avoid accidents. They also wore colourful shirts and had colourful flags for good visibility. As a sign of thanks, drivers throw out coins as they pass by. So we prepared our own coins and gave some to them at every turn until we ran out of coins. We were especially fond of the grandmother who was sitting at one of the stations.
Courage and the willingness to just go for it, whether it is a conversation or a spontaneous trip or trying new things that are scary – it is a really attractive quality.

The Resort
Since it was a quick road trip to Atimonan, Quezon, we didn’t really have time to go to all the tourist spots but we did visit a few ones near the resort where we stayed. The Playa de Lucia Resort which was a newly developed facility. Some parts of it was still under construction at the time and they had a swimming pool. However, we were more interested in getting some vitamin sea so we let the kids enjoy their pool time.
When we finally checked into our room, the first thing we did was rest for a bit on the comfortable beds. While our companions took a nap, two of us went around to scout the area, check out the beach and of course, take pictures.
The Pier
We took everything at a slow pace so we set aside swimming for the next day. For the rest of the afternoon, a friend who lived in the area took us around to some interesting spots. First off, we went to Coco – an old pier which was a trading port back in the day. Though it now has cracks and holes, the structure still looks solid and locals and tourists alike visit the place for a relaxing view of the sea. Of course we had to take pictures and it was especially beautiful during sunset.
The pier extended from the beach far out into the sea. It was this part where the floor of the pier had broken down and through the break, you could look into the deep, blue waters. Approaching the break and looking into the water was exciting and scary at the same time. The water’s deep blue color made it seem mysterious, as though mermaids could be swimming underneath the waves, or sea creatures could suddenly rise up and snatch you.
We didn’t go near the edge to avoid accidentally drowning in the deep waters. The calm waters helped us to relax and just enjoy the view. The walk to the end of the port and back to the beach was quite long but the view all around was a welcome respite from the daily scenery in the city.
The Lonely Mermaid
Our next destination was a lone piece of rock, or boulder which just seemed to be attached beside the road and right behind it, a sculpture of a lonely mermaid atop a smaller rock. See a theme here? The rock seemed to be impossibly suspended since it looked like it had a smaller base; which would make it all the more mysterious but we were too afraid to go down and check.
A lonely mermaid was there and you can walk up to the monument thru cement steps from the side of the road. We didn’t want to risk losing our footing on the slippery steps, so we contented ourselves with a picture of both the rock and the lonely mermaid. Both these lonely structures were by the highway and the backdrop of the beautiful blue of the sky and the ocean behind them made the whole scene beautiful to look at.
The Dinner
It was getting dark at this point so we opted to go back to the resort and prepare for dinner. We had agreed to wear the dresses we could never wear for work during this vacation, and dinner was the perfect excuse to do so. I had prepared hair clips that we could wear as accessories for this very occasion and so off we went to dinner at a nearby restaurant (who’s name I can’t remember) which was also near the sea.
The restaurant was large and though it was dark outside, we could hear the sound of the waves and feel the cool breeze from the sea. There weren’t too many people around so the place felt quiet and we were chatting in low voices so as not to interrupt the relaxing atmosphere. This made eating the dishes enjoyable but it also made us very sleepy after we ate our full.
So after dinner, we wen’t back to our room but we didn’t sleep. We spent the time chatting about our issues in life and figuring out our futures until late into the night. It was one of the most honest, deepest conversations and profound self-reflections that I have had in a long time. Being honest with one’s feelings and getting advise without being judged is such a freeing experience and I am thankful for the experience with these girls. As the night wore on, sleep finally got to us and we agreed to take an early morning swim so we could be back on the road before lunch.
The Beach
The next day, we went down to the beach in our swimsuits. We were met at the hotel entrance by Lucio, the owner’s dog who was named after his late wife Lucia (which is also the name of the resort). Lucio walked with us to the beach. We could hear him splashing in the water as we meditated at sunrise while grounding ourselves in the sand. He didn’t go too deep into the water though although we encouraged him. Instead, he was sunning himself by the beach as though he was guarding us and our belongings.
It’s not the first time I saw a beach with calm waters but in the mornings, the water is usually cold. Here however, the water was warm and inviting and because there were hardly any waves, we could enjoy just submerging ourselves neck-deep in the water without salt spray stinging our eyes.
We mostly floated around to bask in the early sunshine. It seemed as if we owned the whole place because we were the only ones on the beach at this time. Since the sun wasn’t scorching hot at this time of day, we didn’t even put on sunscreen. The whole world seemed peaceful and serene at the time. No buzz from city traffic disrupted our thoughts and the gentle sound of the water and warm sea breeze was calming to our senses. In such surroundings, it was possible to let go of one’s worries and just enjoy the present moment.
The sun was getting warmer and so after a couple of hours, we went back to our room. Lucio also walked with us back to the resort entrance and headed to his usual sleeping spot. We could feel how relaxed he was as we had been relaxed too due to the slow pace of activities we had been enjoying since we arrived.
The Journey Back Home
Before lunch time, we hit the road as we are nearing the end of our road trip to Atimonan, Quezon. We passed by the same zigzag road but this time around, we stopped by the souvenir center. The shop sells local delicacies and crafts. My companions got themselves some honey. I bought some turmeric powder and a woven bag.
Our next stop after this was for lunch along the way, where we also got more souvenirs. After a few more hours, we could tell just by the state of the traffic that we were nearing Metro Manila. We were back in the city again but we feel refreshed and revived. Our short vacation made us feel more ready to face the usual daily grind the next day.
The Experience
We did not visit many tourist spots during this road trip to Atimonan, Quezon because our goal was to slow down our pace and enjoy relaxing activities instead. We all agreed to repeat this experience. Just go somewhere to relax, not worry about tourist spots and itineraries. We just want to be with nature, enjoy the sights and sounds without hurrying back to and from each destination.
We may not remember the names of the places we’ve been to but our senses will always remember the rest and quiet that we experienced together. Two days is a short time to get to know each other better. But somehow we have a deeper understanding of each other’s personalities just from the conversations we had that night and from the jokes and anecdotes we shared with each other throughout the trip. We may not see each other again soon, but we know that we will always have a connection. And we will always be looking forward to our next adventure together.
Still hesitating to go on that trip? I hope this mini-adventure of ours, our road trip to Atimonan, Quezon gets you motivated to plan for your own weekend getaway. Tell us about your best travel adventures and your favorite travel moments.
P.S. Yes, we took a lot of pictures of the scenery around us. Maybe why we only got to visit a few spots. They’re something to look back again to when we are stressed out and we want to remember some of our happy moments.
