How To Ask Someone For Help

How To Ask Someone For Help

Reading Time: 3 minutes

It is difficult to ask other people for help. People tend to want to be able to do things their way. Asking for help from other people means acknowledging that we alone are not capable of doing something. It takes a lot of humility to accept that. In a way, we are also surrendering control of the situation and allowing others to take over. That’s why for most of us, we tend to put off asking for assistance unless we already feel hopeless and we need saving. When this happens, another concern comes up and that is how receptive will the other person be. Just imagine how devastating it could be after gathering the courage to finally ask others for help only to be rejected in the end. So, what are the ways on how to ask someone for help to make sure that we can get it?

1. Ask with Sincerity and Humility

Asking with sincerity and humility makes you vulnerable. This in turn will trigger the other person’s instinct and desire to help someone in need. It is hard to empathize with someone who is acting extremely proud.

2. Be Polite

To be polite means being respectful and considerate to other people. If you are polite, you are more likely to achieve your goals. Use words such as:

  • Please
  • Do you mind if…?
  • May I …?
  • Would it be possible to …?
  • Could you give me a hand?
  • Could you do me a favour?

3. Get the Proper Timing

People are busy most of the time. To avoid being rejected, it helps to ask at the correct time. Don’t just call a friend or family and ask directly, ask them first when is the best time to call them or talk to them. In this way, you can be sure that you are not disrupting anything important that they are doing.

Timing not only pertains to the time but also the mood of the person you are asking too. Don’t ask someone who is in a bad mood. This will only increase your chance of being rejected.

4. Give Them Time to Think About It

If you are going to ask for help, it is proper that you give them time to think about your request. Don’t be offended if they cannot answer you right away. By giving them time, they might be able to come up with something that can help you in the best way that they can.

5. Refrain from Reminding Them That They Owe You One

So you have helped your friend before. And now the tables are turned. You need your friend’s help this time. If you are going to ask that person for help, refrain from reminding them that they owe you one. By doing that, is will sound like you are controlling them. It is like you are asking them to pay back the good deed that you have done before. If are going to help somebody, that’s it. There should be no strings attached. Helping others and expecting them to return the favor later is not helping at all. If there is a need for a payback, then that is considered a loan not a helping hand. Don’t make things awkward. Just ask sincerely.

6. Never Give Up

And lastly, don’t expect them to give you the answer that you are looking for. They might not be able to help you. Sometimes, they might say some things that you don’t want to hear. Be prepared for this. If this happens, it’s okay. Don’t give up just yet. Successful persons like Colonel Sanders and Walt Disney never gave up. You can always ask another person instead.

Save Me

Save Me

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Have you been feeling down lately? Are you so sad to the point that you have given up all hope? It is normal to feel depressed at times especially when we lose someone dear to us, when we are struggling to make ends meet or when everything seems to be going against us. Do find consolation that you are not alone. Everyone had to go through such an experience in life. It is okay to not be okay. What is important is how you lift yourself from your lowest point in life. But what if it is too hard? How to not allow yourself to give up? When this happens, it is a sign that you need help. Take courage. Ask someone, “save me”.

Give me your hand, save me, save me. I need your love before I fall.

– BTS

Asking others for help is difficult because it is often perceived as weakness. It crushes our pride. The truth is there is no shame in asking for help. On the contrary rather than weakness; it is a sign of strength. The lack of humility hinders success. Successful people know this. That is why many successful people acknowledge the fact that they don’t know everything. Thus, they surround themselves with valuable people who can help them in different situations.

True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing. And in knowing that you know nothing, that makes you the smartest of all.

– Socrates

In order to overcome struggles in life, you need to surround yourself with people who will support and help you. There is a power in doing things together rather than alone.

But don’t just ask for help from anybody. Seek the help of a friend or loved one who had gone through the same experience as yours who managed to overcome it successfully. It is important though that these people are positive individuals. Avoid toxic persons for they will only lead you to feeling more depressed. In some cases, it is better to seek the help of experts

Remember, no man is an island. Don’t ever think that you are alone. Now, more than ever; it is better to overcome challenges together.

Bring Out the Fighter in You

Bring Out the Fighter in You

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Many people are in pain right now because of the pandemic. Millions are grieving for their departed loved ones. Many lost their jobs. A great number are sick and are fighting for their lives. Even those that may be safe physically and financially may be living in fear. What to do if you are one of these people? While it is okay to not be okay, we can’t stay in this state forever. Sooner or later, we need to learn how to turn pain into success. Here are tips on how to bring out the fighter in you.

1. Feel the Pain

Pain is a necessary component of life. Without pain, you will not be able to fully appreciate and understand what happiness is.You need to let go and allow the negative emotions to flow. Give yourself time to feel the pain. Cry your heart out. It is the only way towards healing.

Bring it, bring the pain, oh yeah. Come on up, bring the pain. Rain is pouring, sky keeps falling, everyday, oh na na na. Bring it, bring the pain.

– BTS, On

2. Acceptance

It is easier said than done, but you need to learn to accept reality. The world is no longer what it used to be. We just woke up one day to a whole new world. Unfortunately, there is no going back to where it was before. We just need to learn to accept that. The sooner we accept his fact, the sooner we can move on with our lives. Our life has been disrupted, bringing us at a crossroads. Whether it is changing careers, changing addresses or whatever it is; now is the time to make life-changing decisions. And it is easier to make a decision if we understand and accept that things now are different.

3. Find Your Why

Once you have learned to accept the situation. It is now time to find your ‘why’. Why do you need to succeed? Why do you need to overcome this obstacle? Your why will be your motivation. It will serve as your fuel or energy to stand up again. Without this reason, it will be difficult to keep on moving forward. It will be easier to give up.

4. Come Up With A Plan

Where do you want to go from here? What are your goals? In order to move forward, you must first figure out your direction. How can you reach your destination without knowing where you want to go in the first place? If you are still unclear about this, start by redesigning your life through a bucket list.

5. Persevere

The road ahead is never easy. What differentiate successful people like Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney and BTS from those who are not is their level of persistence and perseverance. The ability to keep on moving forward despite the setbacks and challenges that come their way is what makes them successful.

Even if I fall, I come right up, scream. That’s how we’ve always been. Even if my knees dropped to the ground, as long as they don’t get buried; it won’t matter…Can’t hold me down ’cause you know I’m a fighter.

– BTS, On

Yes, you can do it! Believe in Yourself. And some day, you are going to pat yourself in the back and be proud of yourself as you look back to this day. Fighting!

You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.

– Steve Jobs

Believe in Yourself

Believe in Yourself

Reading Time: 2 minutes

You are special. You have gifts and talents that are uniquely yours. All you need to do is to believe in yourself. Know that you are enough and that you have what it takes to be successful. Just let go of your fears and self-doubt. Be confident.

No matter how stressful the situation you are in right now, believe that you can overcome this challenge. You need to have faith in your own capabilities. Be strong!

Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.

– Christian D. Larson

Your Goals

Start by redefining your goals. What may be working before may no longer work today. Then, do one small step a day towards your goals. Do this consistently over time.

Simple daily disciplines – little productive actions, repeated consistently over time – add up to the difference between failure and success.

– Jeff Olson, The Slight Edge

Stumbling Blocks

If you fail, it is okay. You can rise back up again. After all, failure is part of success. The most successful people persevered. They were able to rise above their circumstances. If others can do it, why can’t you? Learn the lessons and move on.

There will be people around who are going to make you doubt yourself. However, it is up to you if you are going to let them influence how you see yourself. Before letting their words and actions hurt you, it is best to ask yourself first who are these people? What are their intentions? Do they have your best interests at heart? Where are they coming from? You should learn to identify the toxic people that you should avoid. Do not allow their negative remarks to occupy your mind. Do not let them affect how you see yourself.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

– Eleanor Roosevelt

If you know your self-worth, no amount of negative words or situations can make you feel inferior. Remember, the choice is yours and yours alone. You gave the consent. You allowed them to make you feel small and miserable. Don’t let it happen again.

Love Yourself

Learn to trust and love yourself. Believe in your infinite potential. You can do it!

How to Rise Above Difficult Circumstances

How to Rise Above Difficult Circumstances

Reading Time: 4 minutes

You are in pain. You are having a tough time.  Nothing seems to be going your way. You just want everything to end. Unfortunately, no matter how miserable you are; life will go on. If it is any consolation, think that you are not alone. All of us, at several points in our lives have to go through challenges. No one is exempted even if you are the smartest and wealthiest person in the world. That’s just the way life is. The good news is that if you feel like you have already reached the lowest point in your life, then there is nowhere to go but up. Take inspiration and some lessons on how to rise above difficult circumstances in life.

Life always waits for some crisis to occur before revealing itself at its most brilliant.

– Paulo Coelho

Low points are the turning points in life. What you make out of them will define who you are and what you will become in the future.

An Inspiring Story

Here is an inspiring story of how a woman overcame her lowest point in life. She was a wife and a mother. Her day-to-day activities revolved around her family. She was financially dependent on her husband. She was also too much emotionally invested into the relationship. Her whole world crumbled when she got separated from her husband after being together for over a decade. It was not just one aspect of her life that ended, it was practically her whole life – her relationship, her dreams, her financial support and worst of all her self-worth. It was devastating.

Today, she is an investor and an entrepreneur who manages several businesses. She employs people especially women who underwent the same experience as her. Her free time is spent helping some marginalized people in society. She is also active in her spiritual community.

It is easier to just give up. Instead, this lady fought back and rose to the challenge that life has to offer. She succeeded in making her greatest crisis as the starting point in turning her life around.

How To Rise Above Difficult Circumstances

She shared with me the steps and some lessons on how to rise above difficult circumstances in life:

1. Embrace the Negative Emotions

The first step to healing is to embrace the negative emotions.  Yes, it’s okay to not be okay, at least at first. Anger, frustration, fear and helplessness are all part of life. Avoiding, denying, ignoring and keeping them inside will only make matters worse. Pain demands our attention. Whether it is a loss of a love one, the end of a relationship, business failure, or whatever painful experience it is; we need to acknowledge them first before we can move on. Avoiding these emotions in the short-term will only lead to stress and long-term pain. Escaping the negative emotions through alcohol and drugs are never a solution, it will only lead to self-destruction.

2. Acceptance

Acceptance is understanding and realizing the reality of your situation. There are just some things that are beyond your control. There is no point to continue blaming yourself or other people for the things that happened.  Know that things happen for a reason.Just let go. It is difficult to understand why it had to happen to you at that particular moment but later on as you look back in life, you will understand why certain events turned out that way. Just accept the fact that there are things that we need to experience in order to grow as a person.

You cannot connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that somehow the dots will connect in your future.

– Steve Jobs

3. Self-Searching

In order to get back in track, you need to start your journey towards self-discovery. Self-discovery means finding yourself again. Meditate and ask yourself, who are you? What makes you happy? Think about your hobbies and interests. Then, ask yourself, what are you good at? Look for the genius within you. It involves recalling your childhood days and remembering past events and experiences in your life that shaped you as a person. It is about knowing who you really are and what you want to accomplish in your life.

As part of your journey in figuring out who you are and who you can be, it is important to not just look into your heart but also to include God in your journey towards self-discovery. Pray. Read God’s word. Meditate. Include God in your plans. And then, surrender.

4. Set Goals

Once you have decided what you want to do in life, it is now time to set some goals. Goals are your stepping stone towards a new version of you. Having goals will give you a sense of meaning and purpose in life. You are done crying over your past. It is now time to look at the future and plan the direction of your life. In order to succeed, you need to make SMART goals.

5. Reconnect with Friends and Make New Ones

Being alone at the beginning is necessary in your journey towards self-discovery. However, long periods of isolation is no longer healthy. Once you have set your goals, it is now time to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. There are people that you need in your life. Extend your social circle. Join support groups. Attend trainings and seminars to help you meet new people in your chosen field of interest. But remember, choose the people that you hang out with. Stay away from toxic individuals. Instead, hang out with people that will motivate you to achieve your goals for you are the average of the five people you spend most of your time with.

6. Serve Others

Serving others will lead to deeper healing. When you serve others, you don’t think about our own pain. Instead, you think about other people’s situations. Once you think about the needs of others, you begin the process of healing. Thus, you end up actually helping yourself. It will also help you identify all the blessings in your life and feel grateful. The fact is even at your lowest point, there will be others who are in a worse state than you. Spending time with them will help you realize how blessed you are.

People Who Cry a Lot are Mentally Strong

People Who Cry a Lot are Mentally Strong

Reading Time: 2 minutes

When was the last time you cried? Growing up, were you ever told to stop crying? Sadly, many societies think that crying is a sign of weakness more so if you are a boy. Males are highly discouraged from crying and showing their emotions because for many, it lessens masculinity. There are certain behaviors associated with boys and crying is definitely not one of them, “big boys don’t cry”. Despite this popular social perception, the truth is actually quite the opposite. People who cry a lot are mentally strong.

Crying is the natural way of the body to cope up with mental stress. Negative emotions will build up if we try to hold back our tears. Thus, a good cry is beneficial to our health. Because of its health benefits, the Japanese even have “crying clubs” called Rui-Katsu. In these clubs, people come together literally to sob. They organize crying activities such as watching sad movies to encourage people to cry to release stress.

Here are ways on how crying makes us physical and mentally strong:

Detoxifies

Reflex tears, the type when get something in our eyes, clear irritants such as wind, pollen and dusts from the eyes. Emotional tears release stress hormones such as cortisol and other toxins. Cortisol, considered the primary stress hormone builds up in the body when we are stressed. Chronic and elevated levels of cortisol in the body can lead to other illnesses. Tears help upload these hormones and other harmful chemicals.

Soothes

Did you know that crying is a self-soothing behavior? A study on crying reveals that it regulates moods and reduces stress. A person’s moods improves after a good cry. When we are stressed, the body automatically goes to “fight or flight” response mode. The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) then should come in restore the body to a calm state. Crying activates the PNS to help the body relax.

Heals

Allowing yourself to feel the pain is actually making yourself deal with your emotions. Rather than running away from it, crying helps you face your feelings. This is a necessary process to recovery. Learning to face our fears will make us more resilient. It makes us stronger individuals.

Aids Sleep

Sleep is a very important factor in our overall health. Troubles normally keep you awake at night. To get a good night sleep, it helps to cry. When you cry, the body not just simply releases stress hormones, it also releases your emotional trauma. That’s why you feel tired after sobbing. It is calming and tiring at the same time. Fatigue will lead you to sleep better.

Improves Vision

Another kind of tear, the basal tears are the ones which are always present in your eyes. They are released continuously to lubricate the entire eye surface each time you blink. Basal tears are considered part of your immune system for they fight against bacterial infection. It also prevents your mucous membranes from drying out. When mucous membranes dry out, your vision becomes blurry. At the same time, if it is continually lubricated, your vision improves.

So, if you are faced with a difficult challenge, go ahead, cry your heart out. It’s okay to not be okay.

Finding Joy in This Challenging Time

Finding Joy in This Challenging Time

Reading Time: 3 minutes

It is normal to feel overwhelmed and unmotivated with all the things happening in the world right now. Yes, life is so stressful for many people nowadays. The health crisis is still there. We have not yet fully adapted to the new normal. And yet at the same time, we found ourselves trying to survive this economic crisis that was brought about by the pandemic.

It is okay to not be okay in times like this but to dwell on it for a long time is a different story. We must not fall prey into unending negative thoughts. The only way to counter this is to fill ourselves with positivity by looking at things to be grateful for in our lives. Finding joy in this challenging time is the key to staying positive amidst all of these.

The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things.

– Henry Ward Beecher

Finding Joy in the Small Things

As life slows down, let’s take this opportunity to be grateful and joyful for all the small things that we normally take for granted.

1.Waking Up

Did you know that about 150,000 people die each day? This is based on a research that was published in 2017. Today, that number may be higher because of Covid-19. The fact that you woke up this morning alone is already enough reason to be grateful for.

2.Family Bonding Time

We live in a fast-paced life. Most of us spend our time chasing money and growing our careers that we tend to sacrifice our relationships in the process. Then suddenly, the pandemic strikes and we found ourselves with too much spare time. If there is anything that this pandemic gave us, it is the gift of time. More than ever, we now have time for family bonding. Here is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with loved ones and create happy and lasting memories together.

3. Access to internet

A few years ago, unless you have an encyclopedia at home; if you want to learn something, you need to go to the library. Online learning and work from home are unthinkable. Nowadays, everything is just one click away. You can work, study, watch shows, movies and concerts online. You can even contact any person around the world without having to pay exorbitant long distance fees. Regardless of the speed of your internet or the model of the gadget that you are using, be thankful that you now have access to the internet.

4. Time for Self-Reflection

Did you find yourselves questioning your thoughts, beliefs, actions, career and other decisions in life lately? If you did, then congratulations! By asking yourselves important questions about who you are, where you are in your life right now and where you want to go from here is an indication of growth. It is the first step towards self-improvement. Now is the perfect time to look within yourself and find your purpose in life and unleash the genius within you.

5. Your Health

Your heart is beating. You can walk, run and do whatever you want. You are not sick. Aren’t you grateful for your health? You used to take it for granted. You party like there is no tomorrow. But now you know that health is the most important thing in life. You now find yourself, making healthy lifestyle decisions. You can experience the joys of life only because your senses allow you to see, hear, feel, taste and smell the beauty around you.

6.People Around You

Challenges are a lot easier to handle if you are surrounded by people who love you and support you. Be grateful that you have them in our life.

7. Nature

If you have experienced being locked down at home during this pandemic, you probably realized by now how important nature is to our lives. The flowers, trees, parks, mountains and oceans have become places to unwind because of their calming power. Nature has become a sanctuary in this pandemic world.

By finding joy in this challenging time, you are shifting your focus from the negative to the positive. As a result, life becomes not just bearable but fulfilling and amazing.
