Understanding Positive and Negative Energy in Life

Understanding Positive and Negative Energy in Life

Reading Time: 4 minutes

We are all born with a basic understanding of positive and negative energy in life. However, as we grow older, we tend to ignore this ability and suppress it instead. Most of us go through life unaware that we are able to sense energy around us as well as within us. In fact, it is a useful skill that can guide us through many challenges in our daily life.

You Are Made of Energy

As adults, most of us are running on autopilot. We plan our day according to a schedule, not minding the different emotions we feel at different moments. You must have heard of the concept that everything around us is energy. In fact, our bodies can be considered living energy fields. Energy is not something we can see but it is something we can definitely feel. It influences a lot of our decisions and actions in our daily life. Have you ever felt suddenly “down” or experienced a “high” from an activity or experience? These are examples of how energy affected your mood and thoughts. Think of other experiences where you were able to feel these different energies and how you acted according to them.

Energy Can Be Sensed

As a living energy field yourself, you are constantly projecting energy towards your environment and other people. In return, you are also able to sense other people’s energies. A simple way to “sense” energy is to rub your hands together until they feel warm. Then hold your hands parallel to each other with some space in between. Don’t you feel a warmth in between your palms that is not the same energy as outside of your palms? Have someone else do this and feel the energy in between their palms yourself. Another example is the feeling you get before heavy rain comes and after the rain. Aren’t the energies in your environment completely different? Do you feel positive or negative energy when it rains? How about after a rain?

Energy is Useful

Have you meet people that made you feel like they’re giving off “bad vibes”? Do you have a friend whom you are always magnetized to because you feel good whenever you’re around them? These people are giving off different kinds of energy and you are reacting to them based on your own energy too. This feeling that you get every time you meet someone or go somewhere is your intuition. It’s an invisible way to guide you in your actions. You know that there is a mind-body connection. Sometimes, how you act is a reaction to how you feel. It can also be a reaction to how others feel even when they don’t tell you about it.

Good Vibes vs Bad Vibes

We are all energy antennas, broadcasting and receiving energy all the time. It is useful to learn when we are interacting with positive or negative energy. People with negative energy usually make us feel tired, exhausted, sad or even angry. If they are constantly projecting this kind of energy, they may even become toxic people that others avoid. If your energy is the same, then you may actually like being around them. After all, misery wants company. On the other hand, people with positive energy tend to attract other people with the same energy. They make each other feel good, calm, safe and relaxed, even joyful. They also generally have a positive outlook in life and are able to treat others with generosity and kindness.

Managing Your Energy

Energy is constantly flowing through us and around us. So if you are always having negative thoughts, this does not mean your are stuck being a negative person for life. Even people with positive energy can have their moments of negativity sometimes. Your energy is affected by your past life experiences, your mindset and your general perception of the world. The good news is, you can always shift your energy at any time. No matter your history, all you need is to focus in the moment to shift your energy and the type of energy that flows towards you and from you. Ask yourself: What kind of energy do I want to be right now?

Increase Your Positive Energy

There are many ways to increase your positive energy. Calming your mind through meditation is a good start. This will help you control which thoughts to pay attention to more. So you should focus on your positive thoughts. Try being mindful of small the moments and spend time appreciating them. This will lead you into developing personal gratitude, which makes it easier for you to feel grateful towards others too. In turn, you will develop a more positive mindset and outlook in life which will also attract towards you more people who have similar attitudes.

Your Energy Matters

Being aware of your energy and the energy around you allows you to be more in control of your life. Instead of being a slave to your usual thoughts and emotions; you can control your reactions so that it benefits you. For example, if you are already feeling “bad vibes” from someone inviting to join them for a night out; then it would be wiser to just decline so you don’t get influenced by their negative energy. You can also increase the chances of someone agreeing with you on a difficult issue if you approach them with the positive energy of understanding instead of a combative attitude. There are many things that can affect your energy but being aware of it is the first step to managing it. Be sure to schedule more fun into your activities and develop better habits to help improve your good mood.

How to Start with Visualization

How to Start with Visualization

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Did you know that some successful people like Olympic athletes hired visualization coaches to help them achieve their dreams? That is because visualization is a super powerful tool that helps high achievers reach their goals. Visualization helps them create their dream lives in their minds. It allows people to believe in this new reality that is manufactured in the mind. This brings about a new level of confidence to accomplish their goals. So, how to start with visualization?

Benefits of Visualization

Visualization is a mental exercise that allows you to focus on the future rather than the now. It makes you imagine a life that you could have. Why is it effective? Well, according to Jack Canfield, a motivational speaker and a co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul; Visualization gives you the following benefits:

1.It Activates Your Creative Subconscious

Did you know that brilliant ideas in the arts, businesses, sciences and other fields all came from the people’s creative subconscious mind? People’s imagination can produce genius thoughts; something that your conscious mind will have a hard time producing. You can get to this state if you find a quiet place to close your eyes and calm your mind. You need to let go of all the stress, worries and all negative emotions.

2.It Programs Your Brain

Instead of focusing on your difficulties, your brain will be reprogrammed to look at solutions. You will be able to readily perceive and recognize the resources available at your disposal. You will be able to find little ways or things that will take you one step closer to your goals.

3. It Activates the Law of Attraction

Since your brain has been reprogrammed to focus on the positive, this activates the law of attraction in your life. You will become a magnet, attracting people, resources and even circumstances and events into your life that will lead you closer and closer to your goals.

4. It Builds Your Internal Motivation

What separates successful people from those who are not is the level of perseverance. All the knowledge, talents and skills in the world are all useless without perseverance. Perseverance is persistence. It is the ability to stand up again when you fall. It is to continue working on one’s goals despite the challenges and difficulties. Visualization builds your internal motivation. It gives you your ‘why’.

How to Start With Visualization

It is easy to start with visualization more so if you understand the benefits behind it. But first, you need to be very clear on what you want. Your goals should be clearly defined. Once you have that figured out, all you need to do is set aside a few minutes of your time. Then sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and imagine.

  • What do you want to achieve?
  • Where do you want to be in the future?

Imagine the future as VIVID as you can. Imagine as if you are already there. It is a world wherein you are already living your dream life. Include all the details in your visualization. Activate all the five senses. See, hear, feel, taste and smell your ideal future.

Repeat this mental exercise daily. Choose the time of the day where you are most relaxed. That can be either in the morning, as soon as you wake up or at night, before you go to bed.

Sample Visualization

For example, your goal is to have a new car. Before you start your visualization, you need to be very clear first on what car you want, what is the model, the color, etc. Once you figure all these out, you are now ready to start visualizing.

  • Imagine yourself waking up in the morning, in your room smelling the air. You should be able to smell the morning breeze. Imagine all the details in your room. Then, you stand up and get ready for work.
  • After taking a bath and dressing up, you now go to the dining room to eat your breakfast. What is the food on the table? Imagine eating and tasting the food on the table.
  • Once you are done, you are now ready to leave for work. You now stand and get your car keys. What is the logo on the key? What does the car key look like? Imagine holding the car key in your hand.
  • You can now proceed to go to the garage. There, you see parked in the garage is your car. What is the brand, color and model of the car? You click the car keys to enter the car.
  • Once you get in, you can smell the interior of the car. You turn on the engine and you leave for work.
  • On your way to work, you turn on the radio of the car and you listen to music with a smile on your face.

To make it more powerful, it helps to create a vision board. A vision board is a visual representation of every aspect of your dream life. Then, expect amazing results.

Good luck!

Simple Habits To Help Improve Your Mood

Simple Habits To Help Improve Your Mood

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Are there simple habits to help you improve your mood? Do you get up bright and energetic in the morning? Or like most people, do you get up groggy or even cranky most mornings? Waking up in a bad mood not only wreaks havoc on the rest of your day. It is also unhealthy for you in the long run.

So how do you wake up more brightly and keep yourself in a good mood throughout the day? Tweaking some of your habits can help. Most of them are quite easy to do.

It is a sad reality that most people “wake up on the wrong side of the bed”. They start their day with a less than positive attitude. If you do not even want to get out of bed to face the day; then you have already set yourself up for failure. It will become stressful just to get through the day.

Common sense tells us that if you want something to change, then you should change the way you do things. In the case of how to wake up in a better mood, improving your sleep quality is a good start.

Make Better Sleep a Habit

If you want to win your battle during the day, make sure to prepare the night before. We all know that sleeping early has great health benefits. If you just can’t go to bed early enough; then improving the quality of the few hours of sleep that you do get is even more important.

Here are some tips to help you get a better sleep.

Don’t drink or eat 3-4 hours before your sleep time. This reduces the chances of you getting up in the middle of your sleep to relieve your bladder. It also allows your body to relax and revitalise instead of using energy to focus on digesting.

Make your bed and room conducive to sleep. Turn off the lights or dim them. Pick a comfortable pillow; put on an eye mask; spray linen and room spray on your curtains and sheets (e.g., lavender, etc.). Keep your cellphone and other gadgets away from the bed. Get an extra pillow to hug or several if you feel more cozy surrounded by pillows. If you sleep on your side, sleep on the left side to improve blood circulation.

Prep your eyes and ears for sleeping. If you need to tire out your eyes, read a book, an actual book. Not only will reading tire your eyes; the repetitive motion of turning the pages will also help you relax and feel more sleepy. If music soothes you into sleep, play a soothing tune. There are plenty of sleep music that you can download online for free. Just make sure to set your music player to stop at a certain time. This way, your device won’t run out of power in the morning.

Focus on your breathing. We have tried the method of counting sheep or counting backwards from 300 or from 1,000. This is supposed to help quiet our mind and make us sleepy. Most of us ended up even more awake. We got frustrated that we couldn’t remember which number we were at as we grew sleepier. So instead, don’t count sheep but focus on your breathing.

Take long deep breaths, both inhales and exhales. Just focus on the feeling of relaxation that washes over you as you breathe in and out. If your mind starts to wander, just focus on your breathing again. This is also how you can start a meditation habit.

This may take some time get used to but keep at it to maximize your sleep time. This will allow you to have more energy to start your morning. Any of these are great habits to help you improve your mood.

Start the Morning Right

One of the best ways to wake up in an energetic mood is to get up, period. Don’t hit the snooze button on your alarm. Instead, make waking up energetically a ritual. Just get up and start your morning routine. You can follow the morning habits of successful people. Or if you already have a morning routine that you follow, make it a goal to accomplish it every morning. This ensures that you develop these habits to help you improve your mood.

Add these to your morning routine for an extra energy boost and more positive vibes.

Start your morning by sipping a warm cup of water. Add the juice of half a lemon and a pinch of cayenne pepper powder. Or have a shot of ACV (apple cider vinegar) to wake you up.

Spend 15-20 minutes bathing in the sunshine and breathing in the fresh morning air.

Exercise your eyesight by staring into the distance for 20 seconds. Then stare at something near (like your hand stretched out in front of you) for another 20 seconds. Do this alternately for at least 5 minutes. Roll your eyes around too and up and down as well as side to side.

Your morning routine sets you up for a more energetic and purposeful day ahead. So always keep at it and you will find that you will eventually be looking forward to it every morning.

Improve Your Mood Now

As we go about our daily tasks, stressful situations can come up. Some will be easy to deal with and some will be difficult to overcome without losing your temper. When the pressure starts building up; keep these habits in mind to help improve your mood. These will also help you get a clearer picture of how to resolve a difficult situation.

Breath deeply for 10 counts. This is often taught to kids to help them get their anger under control. Surprisingly, this works for adults too. When you find yourself having the urge to shout at someone for example; breath deeply instead. Repeat until you count to 10 to help calm you down and help everybody else around you calm down too.

Take a short hike or a quick run. Is your boss or a client breathing down your neck over a deadline or just being difficult to talk to? If you can’t think of a solution straight away, clear your mind for new ideas. Take a short walk, preferably outside the office. Or if you have the time, go on a quick run. This not only helps improve your mood, it also boosts your energy level and clears your head. Of course, to ensure you don’t make matters worse, do this during your break time.

Take a happy break or sniff a lemon. If you are tied to your office chair, give yourself a happy break for 5 minutes. This means putting yourself in a relaxing position. Try putting your feet up on another chair, slowly stretching your neck, shoulders, arms and legs. You could also recline on your office chair or office sofa. Then put your feet up or get up from your chair and do some stretching exercises.

Or, go to the pantry, get a lemon and spend 5 minutes just smelling it. Studies have found that a substance found in lemons help alleviate the “flight or fight” stress response. If you’re not into lemons, try other herbs with a calming scent such as juniper, lavender or even basil. No herbs around? Use your favorite scent.

Compliment someone. If you can’t get out of the office or your office chair; you can always look to someone else to re-channel your energy and focus. Look at any of your colleagues and find one thing that you can compliment about them. This can spark a conversation that distracts you from your stress for a bit. Also, we all know that we feel good when we’ve helped someone else feel good about themselves, so compliment away. This is one of the habits that will definitely help to improve your mood.

Write down 3-5 positive things. When everything seems to be spiraling down to the pits; take a while and ask yourself, “What good things am I thankful for today?”. Recall past experiences that made you feel good; or just think of the things that you are thankful for that day. Simple things such as the fact that you have water in your faucet or in the shower; or you have free coffee in the office are things to be thankful for. It helps to write them down so you can review them every time your mood drops. You can also add to them during the day.

Be your own cheerleader. Talk to yourself but make sure you talk yourself out of your stressful mood and not worsen your mood. Comedians do this in their routine all the time. They talk to themselves as if they are their coach or doting girlfriend/boyfriend or their encouraging teacher. This usually brings laughter to the audiences at comedy clubs and it may have the same effect at your office. Of course, you might also get a few raised eyebrows so make sure your timing is right.

If you’re too shy, you can do this alone and talk to your mirror too. The whole point is to encourage yourself, get yourself out of your negative place and into a more positive zone.

There are many more things that you can do to instantly lift up your mood. You can think of your crush for example, or look up pictures of cute puppies online, or remember a fantastic vacation you had before. All these take just 5 minutes or less while you’re sitting on your chair. If you start feeling down, make it a priority to always get yourself feeling better and more positive. Remember, misery loves company but happy people don’t want to be in the company of misery.

So keep happy and sniff a lemon (when necessary).

Friends You Will Meet in Life

Friends You Will Meet in Life

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Did you have a so-called “best friend” that used you and betrayed you? How about a friend that you always hang out with because you have the same hobbies and interests yet you are not really comfortable sharing your secrets with? And then there is the third kind, the rarest kind, a friend whom you hardly see yet you know will always be there for you no matter what? These are just some of the different types of friends you will meet in life.

Ancient Greek Philosopher, Aristotle, in his Book VIII on Nichomachean Ethics, stated that there are three kinds of friends that you will encounter in life.  For Aristotle, friendship is a partnership, a mutual feeling of goodwill between two people. While there are three kinds of friendships, only one kind is the perfect kind. Two kinds are imperfect, one is based on utility while the other is based on pleasure.

Aristotle further stated that the two imperfect kinds are not necessarily bad. Time is needed to completely know and love a person.  Thus, the two kinds after a long period of time, can actually lead to the third kind. You will always have all three kinds of friendships present at any given point in time in your life.

Friendships of Utility

Friendships of Utility is a kind of friendship wherein two people consider each other friends mainly because of the benefits that they get from one another. It is not normally based on affection. You may or may not like the other person but that person is important to you because you get something from the friendship. Unfortunately, this kind of friendship is temporary. Once the benefit ends, so does the friendship. An example of this kind of friendship is the relationship between business partners or co-workers.

There is nothing wrong with this kind of friendship because it is needed for society to function. Normally, both parties are aware of the kind of relationship that they have, especially if the relationship is on a professional level.

Problems arise when one person treats the other as a genuine friend while the other thinks otherwise. Imagine having a long time friend, not somebody whom you just met. And you realized that you have been used all these years. Think about it, do you have somebody in your life who only calls you when they need something? In your heart, you expect a deeper connection. Unfortunately, for that person; you are simply a friendship of utility. It is painful and hard to accept that somebody whom you have known for so long has only been using you. But that’s just how life is.

If something like this ever happens to you, just accept the fact that the relationship that you have had with that friend is simply just that – a friend of utility.  As Paolo Coelho, on The Alchemist said, it is time to close that chapter in your life, no matter how painful it can be. Your journey together has ended.

Friendships of Pleasure

The second type of friendship is purely based on pleasure. Often, these are friends whom you do things with – the people whom you go to the gym with, who you go shopping with, who you play golf with, your so-called activity buddies. You love spending time with them and you are happy when you are with them. But for some reason, you can’t seem to show them the other side of you. You are not comfortable opening up to them. Rather, you would keep your problems to yourself.

This type of friendship is imperfect because the only reason why you spend time with them is because you want to have a good time. Like the friendships of utility, this kind is short-lived. The thing that connects you both is simply external. Once your preference changes, the feeling of mutual enjoyment will no longer be there. For example, you used to love playing golf until you discovered that you enjoy playing soccer more. Because of this, you no longer spend so much time hanging out with your golf buddies because your preference has changed.

Friendships of the Good

This kind of friendship is the perfect kind. It goes beyond utility and pleasure. It is based on respect, goodness, sincerity and mutual trust. You are not trying to get anything out of it. You share each other’s pain and happiness. You don’t have to worry about putting your best self forward. They will accept you for who you are despite your flaws. They will not tell you what you want to hear but rather they will tell you what you need to hear. They always have your best interests at heart. Neither time nor distance can break you apart. It doesn’t matter even if you don’t see each other often, what matters is that you know they are always there for you no matter what.

This kind of friendship is hard to find but once you do find it, you need to learn to treasure it. If you value it, it can last for a lifetime.

What is A Good Day?

What is A Good Day?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What is a good day to you? How do you have one? How do you measure a good day? Not all our days can be said to be good days. The good thing is, we have the choice to make our day good or bad.

Start the Morning Right

One sure way to have a good day is to get a good start. Do you have a morning routine? What does it consist of? Starting your day right puts you in the right mental state and gives you the energy to get through the daily grind. Your morning doesn’t have to be perfect either. Sometimes, you may need to skip one part of your routine to stay within your schedule. That’s totally fine. Just do better the next time and stay consistent.

Appreciate the Little Things

For the rest of the day, be sure to drink water, take your meals on time and don’t forget to take breaks and indulge in some fun. We often forget to take care of ourselves. We have become used to being busy as a measure of productivity. If you are stressed, anxious or too tired, you won’t be able to enjoy each moment. Did you even appreciate the taste of your morning coffee or favorite lunch? Be mindful of the things that you are doing. Learn to appreciate the little things. Slow down if you have to. You won’t be able to appreciate the good in your day, if you don’t feel good yourself.

End the Day with Thanks

At the end of the day, it’s time to evaluate. Was today good? What made it good? This is the time to be thankful. In your gratitude journal, review and be grateful for the things that made today a good one. Little things, coincidences, surprises, the people who made you smile or comforted you or helped you. These are some of the things that can make up your good day. Include this as part of your night time ritual. Be sure to indulge in some self-care and get a good night sleep to ensure a good start daily.

A good day depends on what you consider good about it. As you continue recognizing and acknowledging the things that make your daily experience good; you will attract more good things into your days. When you look back, you will be surprised that you can count more good days than bad days in your calendar. You might want to encourage your friends to find the good in their day as well. Ask them: What’s good about today?
